Check out our new look for news by phone

If you can get onto the Web with your smartphone, you can follow the news on CharlotteObserver.com anywhere you go.

We’ve offered news over the phone for at least two years now. But we recently upgraded our mobile site. It’s cleaner, easier to navigate and filled with more news and information.

The site is most responsive to smartphones like the iPhone, Droid and Evo. But it also can be read easily on the newer generations of Blackberry, and even older phones that have Web access.

If you have a Web-based phone, simply direct it to www.charlotteobserver.com. Your phone’s screen will go straight to the Observer’s top stories at that hour. Keep scrolling and you’ll get to local news, business, sports, entertainment – even movie showtimes.

If you use a smartphone regularly, you’ll notice that this is not an “application,” which is a framework you must download to your phone before you can view a specific site. This address takes you directly to our mobile site.

Applications, or “apps” as they are commonly called, enable you to take advantage of additional characteristics unique to your particular make of phone.

An application for iPhone readers of the Observer is now in the works. And I expect applications for other popular phones to follow.

I personally use a Droid X. We also have a number of iPhone and Blackberry users in the newsroom. One pointer I offer to fellow Droid users is that you sometimes need to hit the refresh button to pick up the latest headlines as you enter the site. It’s a quirk we are working on that does not appear to be an issue for iPhone users.

So, read us via a printed newspaper, a Website and your phone. All of it is the Observer, the most widely read source of news in the Carolinas. You choose the format that works best for you at any given time. Our goal is to be there for you.

If you have other questions or suggestions, post them here, or send us an email at online@charlotteobserver.com.

So Rick, when will Thatsracing get with the program and join the comment application, or do you not want us to discuss the failing HOF?

looks no different that it did before to me....filled with a lot a social networking things that have little to do with the news...if you went through the front page and just showed what news stories were linked there were be only 17 links. Take a look at the New York Times mobile site please....

Much better. The older site was so unfriendly I rarely used it on my phone, but recently was browsing and came upon it. Kudos.

No conspiracy here. We are still in the process of installing the new commenting system for ThatsRacin.com. I apologize that we are frustrating your interest in commenting on the Hall of Fame story.

Hi Anonymous 11:20 a.m. At least on my Droid, I'm counting 11 stories on the first page of the NYT mobile site. On the Observer's mobile site, I count 21 stories on the first page. Not sure what you are viewing, but apparently it's not the Observer's mobile address. If you are using a bookmark, you might want to check the address to be sure you have www.charlotteobserver.com.

I believe he is using the old charlotte.com address which redirects to the social site and doesn't go to m.charlotteobserver.com If you'll try this address with the m you'll get where we're talking about.

I liked the old mobile interface better. Much more visually appealing and matched the website colors. I'm also kind of tired of all the fluff stories on your main web page. Everyday its the panthers, bobcats, party pics of unattractive people, etc. You're trying to hard to be cool. If we wanted "cool" stuff, there's plenty other websites out there. We want news.
